The curriculum I designed is meant to guide content exploration in a student-centered classroom, in which students are exploring, analyzing, interpreting, making connections, communicating, and demonstrating creative agency in the target language.
I work with a curriculum map that has already been adopted by the WL department in my school. The curriculum for this level has five thematic units for the year, and my website contains three of the units I created for my own teaching. I chose these units to post here because of the PBLL component, which is rich with authentic resources. I have not shared these resources because I believe our classroom resources should be constantly updated and curated to remain current with the world our students are experiencing. You can visit my teacher toolbox to see some of my favorite resources, and you can return to them later because I continually add to them.
Unit 2: The Community and Beyond Unit has a PBLL that allows for the addition of authentic materials and personalization so other teachers can implement the unit using strategies that are part of their toolboxes. The PBLL for this unit is a wonderful project that connects high school students with elementary students through age-appropriate and culturally-appropriate books.
Unit 3:Global Challenges: The Environment Unit is very engaging for students, because many of them have become socially active and conscious when it comes to environmental issues. The PBLL is a broadcast/newscast to bring to light environmental issues that impact the Spanish speaking world and the larger society. The amount of authentic resources the students explore in this unit is amazingly large.
Unit 5:The Arts: The Visual and Performing Arts Unit is the final unit of our academic year. This unit brings students in as we explore artistic expression throughout history, examining social influences in the various art movements that have taken place over time. In the PBLL unit, students study art forms that represent the collective contribution and diverse cultural influences brought forth by humanity, specially within the target culture.
